If you're writing a thesis on the stink of farts, I can't help but wonder the name & level of your class. What's your major?
Biology, Chemistry, Military Weaponry, .... Literature? LOL !
If you are serious about this (ya right, in jokesnriddles) here is my final answer:
The putrefied gaseous portion of leftover ingested materials (nutritious or not - read any labels lately?) which the mammalian body expels, will be composed of the masticated, and subsequently digested compounds produced by the chemical breakdown of those remaining bits and separated into solid, liquid and gas the latter of which this discussion addresses.
This gas is expelled from the ie:) mammalian body and contains particles which have unique qualities for which the olfactory senses have evolved means to discern and send signal of, to that portion of the brain which then categorizes and provides to the conscious mind in the form of inherited and leaned reaction triggers for the purpose of survival.
Inherited reactions to specific airborne particles, such as in fart gas, provide a survival inasmuch as newborn and mother to locate and protect and feed during most vulnerable times at the beginning of life until self sufficient.
Leaned reactions to specific airborne particles, such as in fart gas, provide survival in other ways, such as choosing mates. For instance, if you are visually attracted to an individual, make positive contact, interact and are getting along quite smoothly, then at some point in time one of the couple lets a fart not even a mother could love, survival of both the individual (some farts can kill you), and of the relationship, may become dependent upon the tolerance to that stink.
Your question asks why farts stink. There are two ways to answer this question:
1. My answer is for survival. That's why they stink.
2. My answer provides the composition of the fart which makes it stink but that can only be addressed if there is a nose to smell it, connected to a brain which decides if the smell is stinky or not. That's how they stink?
Its cause they're made of methane gas.

I am currently conducting research as to which foods cause which types of farts. I've been spending on average 12 hours a day in my lab pulling fingers.
