Why do people say bless you when you sneeze?!

Question: This might not be the actual reason but my friends say it is because when you sneeze you skip a heart beat

One explanation holds that the custom originally began as an actual blessing.

Because that's as close to death as you will be until the moment you actually pass away.

When you sneeze your heart stops. A long time they said bless you because when your heart stops you can die.

Origin. Ancient man believed that his breath was also his soul or "essence of life." When God made man, he "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life." A rapid departure of that breath--a sneeze--is the same as expelling life from one's body. Also, it leaves a vacuum in the head which evil spirits can enter. Roman citizens feared sneezing when a plague hit their city during the reign of Pope Gregory the Great. Since they regarded the sneeze as a sure sign of approaching sickness, Pope Gregory in situated the use of the phrase "God bless you" to shield sneezers from any ill effects.

Because a few hundred years ago people believed that when you sneezed you were expelling an evil spirit from your body.

A joke only works if you include the punchline, sweetie

they say wen u sneeze, the devil is relased from you. So they bless u. And i dont think its ture ur heart stops wen u sneeze. i asked my dad; hes a doctor.

i say gazunteight, i dont even know what it means

long time ago people thought that your soul was in your head and when you sneezed it came shooting out and if they said bless you it would get shoved back in there before the devil could get to it...seriously

actually at one time there was a disease that if you caught it you were garenteed to die, the first symptom was sneezing so they started saying god bless you because they thought everyone who sneezed was about to keel over. and its stuck around ever since

in the olden days, people used to think that when you sneezed, your soul was leaving your body. So people started covering their mouths when they sneezed and everyone around them would say BLESS YOU so the soul would stay inside the body.

I think the custom began in Germany many years ago. Did you know that it is impossible to keep your eyes open when you sneeze? Also as others have said your hear stops also. So I think the word for German is guzunthight. Not sure. The spelling is wrong. sorry. So when you sneeze sweety, bless you.
Thanks for your question,

that's because every time you sneeze your heart stops briefly ;p
