When did the "Chicken Cross Road Joke" get old?!

There probably was a time when it was funny. Humor has changed a lot through the ages, but I think that the 20th century with all its new technology killed this joke once and for all.

It wasn't old in the early 1960's, but I didn't understand it. The best answers to it came in the late 1990's, with the new answers like, "Because the road couldn't cross itself" came out.
It was always a rather lame joke.
I know that you didn't ask the meaning of the joke but I noticed that some on here don't know the meaning so I will help them understand as I was once in the same boat as them and couldn't figure out the joke. I finally got it. When I didn't understand the meaning I thought that it was the stupidest joke that I had ever heard, but now that I've finally gotten the meaning I think that it's pretty clever.

Why did the chicken cross the road?
The person knows that it is a joke so they are expecting a punch line or an answer that is funny so they think and think and think and can't come up with anything.
Then you say, "To get to the other side." The reason why people laugh is because they realize that the joke is on them when they thought forever to figure out the "punchline" which was supposed to be funny and then when the answer was soo obvious, they groan and/or smack their foreheads and/or laugh at themselves for looking stupid sitting there trying soo hard to figure out the obvious.
Anyways, I would say the joke died when the chicken got ran over by the car for crossing the road too much. <--- and there's my original joke. Hope you liked it. lol ;)
