It depends on who it is. If its a close friend kind of nip in the butt but be strategic about it. Try not to hurt their feelings. Just tell them as a friend you do not appreciate it. If they value you they will apologize and take it back. Nobody is perfect.
If its a co-worker. Take precise action. Let them know of their improffesionalism. Work is not play. Work is work.
If its someone you loathe. Hammer em'.

I think it depends on the person who is trying to pull a fast one, you might let one person walk all over you whilst another mightn't get past the starting line. Some people are allowed I guess, it's somewhere in the 'unfair but fair rules of life' book.

My teenager is always pulling fast ones on me and I usually let him get by with it, even if he knows he has been caught. Pulling fast ones or annoying things on me are something that
I can take with a grain of salt. No big deal because I have a sense of humor, at least up to a point.
But if I catch someone stealing something that belongs to me, you betcha I would not hesitate to scream as loudly as I could, 'You're a dammmm thief!' Then I would call the police and file a report against that person, unless it was such a trifle thing as a role of toilet paper. When it comes to things like riffling through my purse looking for money, attempting to steal something out of my purse, taking my jewelry, my new cell phone or something very that happens to be sentimental to me like one of my four-legged, furry babies. And I hate it when kids try their best to make off with my son's games for his PS3 and another electronic device he might get for his birthday! Grrrr!!! Makes me hottttt! :(
Yes, in fact if I have even the slightest inkling that is happening, I speak right up. It catches everyone off-guard, the guilty and the innocent. It educates the innocent and puts the guilty in their place.

Sometimes I play along for humor's sake. Like the old joke where you go up to a guy and ask him about the women you saw in the car asking for him. You tell him the girl driving the car's name was Carlotta. He gets all happy cause some exotically named woman and her friends are asking about him so he asks: Carlotta who? To which you reply in front of everyone: Car lotta fat chicks.
I know this lame joke well yet when people play it on me I like to go along with it for the laugh.
