Why do you have to "put your two cents in"?!

Question: Why do you have to "put your two cents in".. but
it's only a " penny for your thoughts"? Where's that
extra penny going to?

It depends on the exchange rate. Two American cents are roughly the same as an English penny when the English pound is strong against the Dollar, but rates vary. Maybe now it should be a Euro for your thoughts?

i know i'd like a penny to listen to my profs lecture..

perhaps all along it was supposed to be "put your two scents in" vs "penny for your thoughts"...depends how bad you need to make your "mark" in the conversation.
