If Jill came down with $2.50 what'd they go up for?!

Question: Jack and Jill went up the hill,
With each a buck and a quarter,
Jill came down with 2 and a half,
they didn't go up for water.

Dad told me and my sister that rhyme, 35 -40 yrs ago!
Mommy didn't think it was funny.
