Can you solve these evil riddles?!

Question: 1A wine importer received a large consignment of bottles of wine from his favourite French vineyard.

He immediately celebrated by drinking one of the bottles.
The day after receiving the wine he sold exactly a fifth of the remaining bottles, which was a good enough excuse to treat himself to a second bottle.
On the third day he again sold exactly one fifth of the bottles he had in stock at the beginning of the day. So again he celebrated with a bottle for himself.
This pattern continued until the end of the seventh day, when the number of bottles left no longer made it possible for him to dispose of a fifth of them on the eighth day.
How many bottles did the wine importer have when he started?

HOCUS + POCUS = PRESTO
92836 + 12836 = 105672

first ones to difficult, im still sleepy

Wayyy too early for math! You just have to work it backwards... ie. start at the end with 4. add 1. multiply by 5. add 1 etc etc

good luck

2)
u said it its hocus pocus .. magic that gives presto!

1 - Day 7, he ended up with 4, at the start of that day he must have had 5 (cos a fifth of 5 is one, leaving 4)
Day 6, add one first, for the one he drunk and you get 6. This is where I get confused, cos to have 6 left over after selling a fifth, you'd need to start with 7.5 bottles?
So maybe on the seventh day, he ends up with less than 4 bottles?
But here's where it goes wrong.
Eg, if he had 3 bottles left on day 7, then he started day 7 with 3.75 bottles.
if he has 2 bottles left left on day 7, he started day 7 with 2.5 bottles.
If he has 1 bottle left left on day 7, he started day 7 with 1.25 bottles.

So the answer is, this riddle must be wrong!

2 - If you assign each letter a number (A=1 etc) then the letters in hocus pocus add us to the same in presto.

boring
