Riddle (Game)?!

Question: Four jolly men sat down to play;
And played all night till break of day;
They played for money and not for fun,
With separate scores for every one.
Yet when they came to square accounts,
They all had made quite fair amounts!
Can you the paradox explain?
If no one lost, how could all gain?

They were in a band/orchestra

My brain hurts...=)

I'm guessing that they weren't playing cards like the riddle would make you believe. Were they all members of separate bands?

They were playing on the streets, because they would sit down and play, then people would give them money, and a score is a music sheet.

Happy Answering!
