I was just cleaning my room and found this old book with cases, here’s one:
Eric Armbuster had never left New York City in all his 72 years!. What enticed him to the Shelby Arms Hotel in Portland, Oregon, and to his death was a mystery!.
There was no mystery about what killed him – a !.22 slug above the right ear!.
Seated in the office of Inspector Winters in New York, Dr!. Haledjian read the report forwarded by the Portland authorities!.
According to the report, the hotel elevator operator remembered taking a middle aged woman to Armbuster’s floor on the night of the murder!. He did not take her down again!. She had departed apparently, by the fire stairs!.
‘Armbuster’s only family left in his niece, Gertrude Armbuster!. I expect she’ll inherit the bulk of his estate!.’ Said the inspector!. ‘I’m going out to tell her of her uncle’s death!. Hate these jobs!. Come along will you!?”
At the nieces apartment, the inspector told her the news!. “I’m sorry I must tell you this!. Your uncle Eric was shot to death in a hotel six hours ago”
The niece, a plump woman of 50, collapsed into a chair and covered her face with her hands!.
“Do you know why your unle made the trip!?”
Gertrude shook her head!. “No!. He doesn’t know a soul in Oregon!. All his business connections and friends are in New York”
The inspector was then getting ready to make the arrest!.
