Answers:
Actually, from a linguistic view, your question is really interesting!. "Put your two cents in" originates in the US, while "a penny for your thoughts" originates in the UK!. Both sayings probably originated in the 19th century when one pound sterling was worth about five US dollars!. In pre-decimal currency there were 240 pennies in a pound!. Therefore, each British penny was worth about two cents US!. So the expressions evolved using equivalent monetary values!.
The confusion for Americans arises because a penny is slang for a one cent coin!. Yet, with decimalisation of the British currency in 1971 and a pound usually worth $2 +/-10% in the period since, two cents and one (new) penny are still roughly equivalent monetary values!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
