There are 5 ants in total!. Just because #1 said there are two ants behind him (which is true) doesn't mean there couldn't be two more where he would then have to say "there are four ants behind me IN TOTAL" Then that would prove with five ants:
#1 has 2 behind and another 2 not mentioned in total!.
#3 would still be able to say 2 ants ahead
#2 would then be able to say (now knowing that there are actually 5 ants in total) that there are 2 ahead and 2 behind!.

Maybe the ant in front and the ant in back were both "aunts" making them "aunt" ants, and the middle ant was their nephew or niece!. He (she) would therefore have an "aunt" ant in front and an "aunt"" ant in back!.
