What is a 'box out' in relation to magazine page structure?!

Question:

What is a 'box out' in relation to magazine page structure?

I've been asked to write a 'box out' for a magazine in a particular style for a test. I'm guessing a box out is just literally a box to the side of the rest of the writing on a page. If so is there any style or formatting I should be aware of? It's to accompany a page about gadgets that are available.

Answers:

It is exactly what you suggest it is! Take a look at, for example, a woman's magazine and you'll see features on so-and-so. On the page somewhere will usually be a box out, full of information relating to the feature, highlighting one aspect of it, unusual details etc. It's just an add-on for the feature.

You'll have to watch your word count, as you'll be surprised at how little information you'll be able to get into it! Be concise and make every word count.
