Answers:

I have a book which came to mind (I actually own it) and that’s “Homecoming” written by: Cynthia Voight. I’ll give some details of the book and if it’s not it, if you have anymore details to provide, I’ll try to pin-point which book your referring to. Homecoming is about four children, (Dicey, James, Maybeth, and Sammy). Their mother had difficulties making ends meet and snapped under the pressure (of raising four children alone due to the father leaving during her pregnancy with Sammy) not to mention she isn’t a very reliable parent which is clearly shown when she packs the four children into the car, driving miles away from home to the mall, where if I remember correctly she had told the children to do as Dicey (the oldest) said, and walked away without saying anything else. When the children realized their mother wasn’t coming back, Dicey being the oldest decided to continue the journey to their Aunts home, where she believed her mother had intended to take them before (what they believed the case to be) something happened to her. I don’t quite recall how much money they had to start with, but it was very, very, little. There were points throughout the book where the children were unable to eat, but Dicey made money by washing windows at a local store and carrying bags for people. They slept at different places (a park and I believe it was a porch of an abandoned house, etc). Two college kids had helped them with not only food and shelter but also dropping them off at their destination of their Aunts House. However, their Aunt had passed away and it led to a lot of events, which had put the children right back at square one, on the run in search for a home, having to search for food and means to survive along the journey of finding that place to call home. Luckily, there was a happy ending in this book, they ended up living with their grandmother who owned a farm, and at last the children have a place that they could call home.

If this isn't the book, as I said, if you could please provide more detail. Although this may not be the book, it's a great story and definitely worth a read.
