What would the structure and layout be like for an indie magazine?

try looking at stock photography sites for some inspiration for themes, istockphoto.com have some good 'grunge' titled backgrounds and vector images that you might find good for inspiration. (there r other stock photog sites too but i find istock quite good, varied, not just pics.)
as for layout and structure just stick to a simple grid but make stuff break out, play with the levels if hierarchy a bit and try putting some bit wilder larger images as backgrounds - be careful with running the type over them though. i always find empire mag (the film mag) good to look at because they have a good grid running thoughout but manage to alter it completely for the specific film reviews - spiderman was a great issue and their use of the grid combined with the themes of the film was great.
