Book stores throwing books away?!

Question:

Book stores throwing books away?

My professor was talkng about how book stores will tear off the cover of paperback books and magazines and then throw them away. If you see this happening is it legal to go get some from the dumpster?

Answers:

I worked at Borders for 3 years. Once a month all of the "trashy" monthly romances were rotated out and the covers were stripped. The covers are mailed back for credit and the body of the books are tossed. Periodically, the stores are sent recall lists in order to remove stock that isn't moving or excess copies of specific titles. While hard covers and quality paperbacks(oversized) are returned the mass market paperbacks are also stripped in the same way. The reason you can't take those stripped books without being nailed for theft is because money is still changing hands(in the form of the credit for the stripped covers that are returned ) and aquiring the body of the books means that you have come into possession of copyrighted materials w/out paying for them-effectively ripping off the author.
