Are we missing something musically?!

Question:

Are we missing something musically?

for the last few months or so I've been going back musically to the 60's and 70's mostly. Even in my own teenage and 20's years in the 80's and 90's I had some connection to the music of my own time (MEtallica, slayer, cars, etc) but my preference was aways to bands like rush, the who, genesis, yes, kansas, beatles, etc. Listening to modern music today it all sounds the same. All of it... I can honestly not tell between any of the bands that exist today although i've heard of many of them. agree or disagree?? HELP

Answers:

I absolutely agree with you

Innovation kind of slowed to a halt after the grunge movement and the 90s (Nirvana etc.)

I have 3 theories for this:

1. The record companies are so busy freaking out about digital piracy that they have completely ignored the quest for new sounds. Thus far, record companies are in charge of what we hear - they make or break artists. Soon, when every band has their own website and myspace account, bands will go direct to consumers. Initially (like we see now) there will be a flood of "me too" bands e.g. "if you liked cold play you will like these guys" but eventually a few unique sounds will break out and differentiate themselves. I predict a U2 caliber band in the next 2 years and a new genre of music in the next 3 years. Something you can dance to that has complex, smart lyrics and is not rap.

2. I don't think we had a plan for anything after the year 2000. We just kind of fell off a ledge in many ways. Fashion, movies, music, politics. That's why the 80s came back. To comfort us. All the "new sounds" today sound like 80s bands. The 80s were a good time for us. We were doing well as a nation still had the respect of the world etc.

3. The new generation has been trained and bred for homogeneity. The 20 somethings are the most programmed generation ever. Everything in their lives has been branded and they were raised by the TV set. Those of us who grew up in the 60s-80s actually went outside and played. This generation has been raised dumb, fat and submissive. Notice where the advertising and marketing dollars go - almost all to the myspacers. Why? Because they are programmable and receptive to advertising. Even though there is an aging population of baby boomers, that population is all but ignored by the advertisers because they still have their personalities. The baby boomers lived thru the 60s, the protests a time where people questioned things. Today you can disappear, wake up in a cage in a place that's neither the US nor cuba and be held for years without even being told what you are accused of...and this generation puts up with it because the television tells them this is what is happening and if you see it on TV then it must be valid.
