When I subscribe to a magazine, how do I keep them from sending me all those back issues?

I would like to subscribe to a nursing magazine, but they have a terrible habit of sending me several back issues that I don't want and then in a month or so tell me I am up for renewal. I know it is a marketing scam. I just wish there were a person I could talk to to tell them exactly when I would like the subscription to begin. Anyone else have these issues?

This has happened to me too! They would send me back issues that I had already purchased on the newsstand. Cosmopolitan was the worst offender. I no longer subscribe or even read it.
