How do magazine editors get their start?!

Question:

How do magazine editors get their start?

Answers:

Get a degree in either journalism in writing. While in school, seek out internships at publications where you might like to work. Sort mail, work events, do whatever drudgery they ask of you. Always be eager to learn more. Work at the school paper or other university publication. Begin networking on day one; you professors and other students can still be good resources after you graduate.

Your first job will likely be as an entry level staff writer, copyeditor, fact checker or editorial assistant. Try to stay in the industry in which you're interested. Text book copyeditors do not go on to edit magazines. Join professional organizations. Continue to learn while working your butt off for little pay.

Work your way up the ladder while continually looking for opportunities. Build your resume, gather clips, establish a good reputation as a professional. Go to a lot of cash bar functions with other people who want to be editors.

If you're lucky, around the time you're sick of being a writer an editing job will open up. Then you're on a whole new ladder: assistant, contributing, associate, managing and on up to executive edtor or editor in chief.
