Are your magazines doing your self esteem more harm than good?!

Question:

Are your magazines doing your self esteem more harm than good?

I think some magazines are great, i love them..(read them on the loo..as you will know if you read my last question) but i feel that a lot of them are filling a gap in peoples' lives. I totally avoid the girly mags now, they are filled with trashy girls and the writers pick faults with any celeb they can find, pathetic things like people having a spot.
What is their exact intension? Are they pointing out celebs' flaws in order to make us all feel better about ourselves? I think it has the opposite effect on people convinces them to think it is hidious to have a spot.
They will ridicule someone for having a spot or putting on 1lb or having a "freaky toe" or some other ridiculous flaw.. but they wouldn't dare say something about a person with a disability, nor should they, what i am getting at is that all of the things they point out are just part of being human and it we should say " so what,? human beingsDo get spots, they DO sweat, etc..those types of mags are Mind Garbage.

To explain further my point in reference to what i said that magazines wouln't dare say anything about a person with a disability, i that they wouldn't ridicule a person with a disablitiy because it is morally wrong to do so, but i think it is morrally wrong to criticise someone for breaking out in spots, it's not as though we can say, "hey face, don't get spots" the writers of these magazines get spots for crying out loud! It is just so pathetic and dull and unfair. Don't read them if they make you feel less than fabulous, as we are all fabulous, but the media and society tries to tell us differently, just to keep us in our place!

Answers:

I absolutely do not see how magazines can be doing any sort of 'good' to peoples' self esteem. Even if you are completely comfortable within your looks and personality, magazines point out what is seen as 'acceptable' to those who admire beauty and fashion. They put you under pressure to wear certain clothes because thats what the 'beautiful, fashionable people wear'. If you are born thin and beautiful, magazines only enforce the idea within you that you can never allow yourself to become like the humiliated celebrities we see everyday in these publications - how they've put on weight, have wrecked their hair, have worn something that makes them look awful in that magazine's eyes.

Magazines can be fun to read when you're just looking for something light and non-commital, but the constant criticism of everyone featured in it apart from the airbrushed and digitally manipulated models will never do anyone any good.
