If I want to put an article in a large magazine, how do I do that if im not a contracted writer for them???

you need to contace the magazine well in advance of when you want the ad to run. The ad space in magazines is bought by media buyers...people whose only job in life is to buy ad space for companies. Depending on how big you want the ad--ex: full-page, multiple pages, half-page, you may have to wait a while. magazines usually have half their year's subscription layout done up to six months before the mags are even printed. I would definitely contact the advertising/media people at the magazine.
