I've received a magazine subscription (presumbly a free subscription) in my name which I did not subscribe for. Is this legal? If not, what is this an offense of anyway?
Answers: I would not presume you are getting a "free" subscription. Unless you are getting a trade publication in which you would also receive a notice about your "complimentary" subscription. Most likely what happened is that someone subscribed you to it as harrassment if you did not get any notice otherwise (like that it was a gift from someone you know). People can do this on the magazine's website or by using a subscription card that appears in the magazine.
It is not "illegal" for the publisher to fulfill the order. However, if you feel you are being harassed, you should call customer service and ask for the "source" of the subscription. The can provide a copy of the original document which can provide the person's handwriting, or they can trace an internet order back to them. You can give this information to the police to stop the harassment.
In either case, unless you are going to pay to continue it, it is in your best interest to cancel. Source(s):
I work in magazine publishing. It's all yours. If the publisher sends you a bill explain that you never ordered it. Write cancel on the bill and send it back. But first look inside for the small print about the publisher to see if it's PERIODICAL RATE. That means it's a real magazine and not glorified junk mail. You have to take action and cancel it. Even though you did sigh up for it. Some times when you sign up for thing on line you don't know it but you are signing up for other things. That happen to me and ended up with a subscription to Some Hollywood mag. I just wrote them and they stopped it, and didn't charge me for it and still sent me one more subscription, just in case I change my mind or something. Just let them know before it's too late.
