TIME, Inc. Ventures into Teen Market - Launches Mouth2Mouth Magazine ----
[April 15, 1994 by Erika Isler]

While the top brass at Time Inc. Ventures awaits reader reaction to the March 14 launch of Mouth2Mouth, the Los Angeles-based teen title has already received the green light to produce a second issue this fall.

Described as a general-interest cross between Vanity Fair and Mad by founding editor Angela Janklow Harrington, Mouth2Mouth is targeting the MTV generation of 15- to 19-year-old males and females. The title, which distributed 250,000 copies with a cover price of $2.50 (blow-in cards offer six issues for $12), has the attention of the company's top talent. Carol Smith, president and publisher of the Parenting Group, supervised ad sales, and John Kilngel, TIV director of magazine development, helped shepherd the concept to fruition. TIV editor-at-large Gil Rogin also had a hand in editorial. Harrington, who shopped the magazine's concept for two years before landing at TIV, previously spent five years at Vanity Fair, where she was the youngest columnist in the publication's history.

The premier issue of Mouth2Mouth carried 97 pages of editorial and 43 pages of ads (with 15 from the entertainment sector and 11 each devoted to fashion and beauty). But some observers wonder whether there are enough pages to go around in the teen market--even though future growth is predicted. "This market has basically been stagnant," notes YM publisher Vicci Lasdon. Although YM was up eight pages, from 44 to 52, through February 1994, Sassy was flat at 58 and Seventeen was down eight, from 103 to 95.
