It depends. The magazines I've worked with have people who run the business of the magazine and then they have "content experts" who generate the magazine's content. A journalism degree, for example, isn't so hot for a computer magazine if you want to work on the content side.

I'd suggest for the magazines you are talking about you'd want to look at something like marketing or fashion and perhaps minor in journalism. Also, consider finding editors for these magazines and dropping them a polite note and ask them to share their views.

So while the flip answer to your question is "journalism" the real answer is a lot more complicated.

By the way, if you are really interested in writing, start now. There are lots of opportunities for young writers to get published -- even more now then there used to be. Find a journalism teacher or ask your librarian to help you -- they love aspiring authors. They can help you find a "Writer's Market" and the LMP, which are both good tools for finding places to write. Write for the school paper. Intern for free at a local marketing magazine. Join some of the writing communities on the Web. Write constantly. Read the magazines you want to work on.

Although it is geared at non-fiction, you might find some of this advice useful: http://decenturl.com/associatedcontent/m...

Good luck!

i can't really help you with your question...but maybe some ideas....

write a letter to one of the authors in your magazine's you're interested in working for and ask them how they got started.

there's this website: http://www.bls.gov/oco/
it may help. i hope you get some good answers because I'm thinking about doing the same thing, except I believe I want to be a senior editor instead.

you'll need lots of english courses in college and probably a B.S. in english.
