I have a Life magazine first vol. from 1883? How much is it worth?!

Question: The staples are still in the magazine. It has a picture of cherubs on the front from Jan. 4 1883. I believe this is the first issue of this magazine.

o thats pretty cool. uh it mite be wortharound a hundred dollars or so.

That undoubtedly is the first issue of 'Life'; unfortunately for you, there have been two different magazines named 'Life'. The better known publication began publication in 1936, after Henry Luce bought all rights to the first magazine in order to secure the rights to the title. The bad news is the second version of 'Life' is considered far more collectable than the first version.

The good news is that the first issue of the first version of 'Life' is rare enough that it would be desirable to collectors of 19th century magazines. The condition of issue you own is going to matter a great deal to its estimated value.

I advise you to find someone who specializes in 19th century magazines and rare books, if you are considering trying to sell the issue.

The link below gives a capsule history of the two publications.
