Answers: sales if people see a another mag to be interested in as well?

Most of the time when they do they do that it's because they are owned by the same company. People read more than one magazine so if one is doing better in sales, then the one not doing so good will advertise in it because they have more readers!

Actually, no. I Mean no it does not cut into their sales.
They enjoy the mall effect.
You might not have noticed but malls group similar businesses together. You might believe from fundamentalist economics that they would be losing business to each other, but actually they all end up selling more because they draw more shoppers into the area who comparison shop and buy.
Magazines have a similar situation.
One magazine in a field is not enough to make it seem serious to people. If there are at least 3 magazines about the subject people read and compare. A person who buys discovery will likely also buy American Scientist and one more related magazine. They will not likely just buy one magazine.
So advertising in a magazine in the same field as yours is good for both the magazine publishing the ad, and the one who is advertising. This is benefit above and beyond simple advertising.
Not only do you gain from advertising to a target market, you are validating the whole field of interest for the readers.
