My 2 favorites are:

Dune - Loosely based on the Frank Herbert book. Basically a messiah story set 10,000 years in the future, on a desert planet which is the only source of the world's most priceless commodity - a mind altering subtance called "Spice." Stars Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks), Patrick Stewart (Star Trek TNG) and Sting (of the Police, not the WWE) and was one of the last projects that the DiLaurentis brothers worked on together. It's not really the same story as the books (which are phenomenal!), but if you don't try to compare them, it is a great movie on it's own.

The Highlander - Not exactly under the radar, but still my favorite... It's got just about everything - sword fights, immortal warriors, Sean Connery, a soundtrack by Queen, and vulgar nun-taunting. If you haven't seen it, get the director's cut... it's worth the effort to find it.

P.S. - as an aside, I am also a huge fan of the director's cut of The Abyss with Ed Harris. It's actully a different movie than the release version, as there's a whole sub-plot that they left out. The end makes A LOT more sense in the director's version.

Also, if you haven't yet, check out the movie Serenity - was based on a short lived but much loved series called Firefly... action packed funny and very very smart - kind of space smugglers with a heart kinda theme.

P.P.S. - Had to echo some of my above posters when I saw what they had written... they went the classic sci-fi route and i whole-heartedly agree - 2001, 2010, Alien and Aliens are classics, and Blade-Runner is a must see! I would add Planet of the Apes (the 1st one only), and beleive it or not, a Disney movie called The Black Hole - it's MUCH darker than you would expect.
