Hey I had that same question too but now it makes sense to me. If you will remember that in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Harry pulls the Gryffindor sword out of the sorting hat because he showed real loyalty and courage. Well remember that Neville has the sorting hat on his head when he is confronting Lord Voldemort. Because Neville is being so loyal and brave the sword comes out of the sorting hat. Then Neville is able to cut off Nagini's head. As for and answer to your second question Dumbledore saw his sister Ariana alive with his whole family in the Mirror of Erised, he lied to Harry when he told him socks. That wasn't true.
