If I write a screenplay based on real events from my life, is it a problem to in!

Question:

If I write a screenplay based on real events from my life, is it a problem to include real-life people?

In other words, suppose I wrote a screenplay that centered mainly around my relationship with a now ex-girlfriend. Legally, is that permissible, or do I need her permission to sell it, supposing that many of the events are real, but I've changed her name as other small details?

Answers:

since it's your life - you can use as much of it as you want.
but you should- as you're doing - change the names and other details to prevent a general audience from knowing exactly who that person is. changing the person's physical characteristics and names of locations are also a good idea.

what you're trying to do is prevent an average moviegoer from recognizing the characters as real people that are in your life. give them quirks or make them say something that never happened so they can't claim you're copying their life.
