Can a two hour and thirty minute indie film with unlicensed material be put out !

Can a two hour and thirty minute indie film with unlicensed material be put out without me being sued?

I'm a dork who wants to put out a lame movie with lots footage from Dr. Strangelove in it, I think I'm George Lucas's long lost son, can somebody please help me.

The laws about the whole copyright issue are so weird these days, I wouldn't want to chance it. Seems like if you aren't showing this for profit it would be okay, but, ye gads, who knows?
Just wondering...why would you want to make a movie and use lots of footage from someone else's work?
