A friend was telling me about it, how he watched it when he was a kid... I want to find it for him. I guess the shark kills the boy's grandfather at some point, and the grandfather's spirit comes to live inside the shark because years before he had rescued it from a tidepool...

Not sure which one is the one from your friend's youth, but I'd guess it's probably BEYOND THE REEF since the other is quite a bit older.
