Tracy Turnblad idolizes the Corny Collins show. When a regular dancer on the show has to disappear for nine months the show is suddenly in need of another dancer.
Tracy embodies this as her opportunity to pursue her dream, dance on the show and be among the glamour with her crush Link Larkin. Little does Tracy know that teen queen of the show Amber Von Tussle and her mother Velma have little tolerance for those who are less than 'picture perfect' and able to steal Amber's spotlight.
Tracy ends up the new star of the show at the approval of Corny and with her entrance she brings along friends Seaweed, Motormouth Maybelle and Little Inez. Everyone isn't as approving of Tracy's acceptance of Seaweed and his crew and Tracy soon discovers that if she is to share the spotlight with her hearthrob Link and her new buddies Seaweed & Co. she's going to have to do more than cut a rug to change how the people in her town get down.
