Can't remember name of this movie, help movie people?!

Can't remember name of this movie, help movie people?

Okay it came out probly in the early 90's the main character is a little boy about 8-10, there is a war going on. He gets separated from his parents and I believe it takes place somewhere other than the U.S. I remember a scene where he goes back to his home and it's in ruins. Does this sound familiar to anyone? It's driving me crazy!! Thanks
