Anyone remember this movie?????

I really want to know what movie this was.. it was an animation.. it came out a very long time ago.. teh descriptions i remember are like this.. there was a man.. and i think he falls in love with this princess, and the image of her i remember as indian or middle eastern.. and her castle was huge.. and later there are scenes of him running around in the stairs of the castle and it's very illusional and lots of checkerboard textures of the floor and many puzzly surfaces and colors.. and also he was a bit freaky looking and he had flies around him sometimes.. very skinny, i remember piercings.. a bit.. and one time he got locked in a basement cell of the castle and he saw feet going by through the cell window.. i remember it to be very exotic and illusional.. that is ALL ir emember but i really want to know what this movie was called because it was one of my childhood favs.. anyone have any suggestions on what this movie was?!??!?!

it was an animation movie, all cartoonish. very fantasy like, puzzling, exotic, illusional etc etc

OH OH they werent piercings,, he was holding nails/screws in his mouth throughout the movie, and i tink he was someone that fixes shoes..
