I guess she knows about Kate's adultry with the guy. But the attitude seems somewhat shallow. Do people really act like that?

The movie was an example of the attitudes of the typical surbanites. The behaviour was incredibly shallow, because the woman was shallow. Remember that Kate studied the behavior of the woman at the park. If you remember correctly that particular woman and her friends would go on and on about "The Prom King" who Kate later had an affair with. Her reluctance to enter shows a level of hypocrisy and it also in my opinion showed jealousy. All the women in the park were in the same kind of marriages that Kate was in. They were bored and loveless and here Kate was having a torrid love affair.
Some people do act like that. Hypocrisy is rampant anywhere you go and supposed ethical superiority is something people love to flash around.
