Directional microphones on a boom, are used to record actors voices. They are designed to block out almost all other noises. Much of the sound you hear in movies, is recorded in a studio and synced up with the video...(dog bark, traffic, thunder, rain, slap, gunshots, screams, wind, crickets, a car door opening, door closing, walking in a hallway, paper shuffling in an office).

Very little sound that goes into a movie is recorded during the shoot....aside from actors voices...and even then..sometimes they are re-done in a studio to fix errors. The sound is always recorded seperately from the video shots, then they edit and sync it to the video in a studio. A Hi-fidelity digital recorder with a directional boom microphone is used mostly to record actors voices during a shoot. They make all kinds of mics for all types of applications however...
