I would take that to mean that the plot is placed somewhere above the gore-factor. It's probably a bunch of empty talk or a ploy to trick people who are tired of the mindless hack & slash. I would define a true "intellectual's slasher flick" as something like "Identity,""May," or "Strangeland."
