Answers:

It's not just Bollywood that copies Hollywood movies. It's common throughout the world. In China and Russia they copy films from other parts of the world.

It's all about making a film that fits your cultural style and your local audience. Certain things may be offensive or seem strange to a foreign audience. India has a big thing about music and dance in it's movies - much like the musicals that Hollywood once churned out by the bucketload.

As an aside here, somewhere in the Far East, they released The Sound Of Music minus all the songs because the style of music was so unpopular locally, people would have walked out of the cinema - but it didn't leave much of a movie.

And it happens in reverse too. Hollywood make their versions of many movies from the rest of the world. The Grudge, The Ring, Green Card, Vanilla Sky - off the top of my head - are all copies of non-American movies. And what about Akira Kurasawa's movies? They have been copied into Hollywood moves, The Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro and Rashamon - all copied either scene for scene or recognisable as the inspiration of a US film.

It ain't just Bollywood - it's everywhere in the world.

The Indian film industry didn't call itself Bollywood. That came about because observers noted that India produces more movies than any other place in the world and in terms of production costs to returns, these movies make more money than any other movies in the world. To us Western audiences, they may seem a bit tacky and silly, but they very obviously have an audience or people wouldn't be making them.

Yes, they make a high percentage of Hollywood copies, but Indian people don't want to watch our films. Like the Hindu religion and people, Bollywood movies seem to be a mix of fun and colour and exciting things.
