Yes they start out that way.
I saw a movie once and I was literally the only person in the theater. The movie was on for about 5 minutes and then it shut off. I had to go out and tell them I was in there, and show them my ticket. I felt bad, because it was probably a 500-700 seat theater and I was alone, but I paid for the ticket. They all start, but if they really have no one in there, I think they shut it off after a while.
