In the movie fargo, how does Jerry (William H. Macy) gets in so much trouble in !

Question:

In the movie fargo, how does Jerry (William H. Macy) gets in so much trouble in the first place?

In the movie Fargo (I have seen many times), they never said why/how he got in so much trouble. I know he needs the money to pay GMC for those cars and the loan... but???

Answers:

The movie never goes into how Jerry lost the money, just that he desperately needs to repay the $300K loan from GM -- fast. When he's going over the plans with Carl and Grimsrud, they pointedly ask him what he possibly had done that's making him kidnap his own wife for money. Jerry calls it "personal matters" and very clearly avoids explaining his reasons.

Jerry's a weaselly little guy -- he's probably been embezzling money at the dealership to pay for some schemes of his or to cover his own expenses, or maybe he screwed up at work and was trying to cover his own back so as not to get in trouble with his father-in-law. The hostile relationship with Wade is probably key to understanding Jerry's desperation in not going directly for the money.
