Why did the Chief, the tall deaf-mute American Indian, kill patient R.P. McMurphy in the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?

Answers:

That was a pretty cool novel, mainly because Ken Kesey wrote parts of it while he was on acid trips...but anyways:

At first glance, it appears that Chief Bromden killed McMurphy to end his suffering. However, there is a more in-depth reasoning behind this. The true reason that he killed Mac is because he didn't want Nurse Ratched to win. Big Nurse represented oppression and authority, while Mac represented change and rebellion. With Mac there, in his vegetated state, he was symbolic for victory. If he was allowed to stay there like that, then he'd be a constant reminder of Nurse Ratched's control over the ward. With that thought, Chief killed Mac in an effort to relinquish any remaining authority that was remaining from Big Nurse.
