What is the significance of the first scene in Boondock Saints?!

Question:

What is the significance of the first scene in Boondock Saints?

In the first scene, the two brothers walk into the church, walk up and kiss the foot of Jesus on the cross. A priest starts to stand in disagreeance, but another priest whispers something into his ear and all is well. As the two brothers walk out of the church, the one says "I do beleive the monsignor's finally got the point". Does anyone know what this means? We have watched the movie a hundred times. We can understand the corelation between what the priest says "we must all fear evil men, but there is another kind of evil we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men" and the movie.

My fiance thinks the woman the priest is talking about, Kitty, may have been their mother, but I am not sure. Any other perspectives on the entire first scene and what it may mean for the entire movie?

Answers:

I do think some thing bad happen to there mother, and that the Priest knew the boys werent being disrespectful of the church, but the "new" Priest thought that they were out of line. I felt that it was out of place, and should have been after they had killed the mob guys.
