Did you think the 2nd Star Wars trilogy was kind of lame??!

Question:

Did you think the 2nd Star Wars trilogy was kind of lame??

I really liked the first trilogy (the original Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Return of the Jedi), but I thought the more recent trilogy wasn't very good. I mean, there might have been a scene or two in each film that was kind of cool, but overall, I don't think they can compare to the original trilogy.

Agree, disagree??

Answers:

I think George Lucas waited far too long to make Episodes I, II and III. When "Star Wars" came out (not as "A New Hope", just "Star Wars") he was a hungry writer/director with the originality of youth. I remember sitting in the theater on the edge of my seat, totally blown away by what was unrolling on the screen in front of me: R2D2, looking more like a canister vacuum than anyones idea of a robot, C3PO standing in the desert with the skeleton of some huge beast jutting out of the sand behind, Darth Vaders breathing through that mask, Lukes underground home, even Leias cinnamon bun hairdo. His "used future" was totally new. Also, despite the (for the time) mind blowing SFX, the first three movies were character driven. We loved Luke and Han and Leia, and we hated Darth Vader. In the second trilogy the New Republic is shiny and new and all too digital, and characterization is thrown out of the window in favor of more fantastic settings and more fantastic creatures that could only be created through CGI. Hayden Christianson is actually a fine actor (check out "Shattered Glass") but you'd never know it watching Star Wars II and III. In a pre-release "Revenge of the Sith" interview in Time he said "I wish they taught classes in green screen acting". That makes two of us, Hayden.
