How come movies from the 40's, 50's, and 60's leave so much to the imagination and are hard to understand?

it had to do very much with the "Hollywood movie code" of that time. it was a very strict set of guidelines that dictated what was allowed and not allowed to be shown in movies made by any director in any studio during that time.

one of the directors best known for finding the loopholes to the code was Alfred Hitchcock. Example:
the movie code forbade open-mouthed kissing.
Hitchcock was known for having a character be kissed in mid-sentence, therefore achieving an open-mouthed kiss without actually having it be explicit.
