What Makes A Role Oscar Worthy???!

Question:

What Makes A Role Oscar Worthy???

I was watching Dreamgirls and I thought that Jennifer Hudson did a good job (definitely next to Beyonce)..but I was just wondering what makes a role, not just hers but any role, worth winning an oscar?

Answers:

You have to bring a multi-faceted character to the screen. It's a perfomance where you see all sides of a character, not just the obvious, and also reveal true emotion. Many actors speak of 'making a character their own' and pour themselves into the performance. Look the performance of Tom Hanks in Philadelphia, as one good example.
Sometimes, though, the Academy gives Oscars to people for roles as a way of making things up to them for overlooking them earlier (Julie Andrews won for Mary Poppins as a way to make up for not casting her in the role of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, which she originated on Broadway. She should have won for Sound of Music the following year), or rewards blockbuster roles based on real-life (sorry, but Julia Roberts did not deserve the award for Erin Brockovitch and neither did Gwynneth Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love. JMO) And they also over-look you if you are too successful (Stephen Speilberg didn't win until he turned more serious with Schindler's List).
So, while paragraph one is what SHOULD be, it is not often what is the end result.
