This question contains spoilers so don't read it unless you've seen the film... there is a big warning at the begining not to tell people the ending and i'd hate to provoke the wrath of Nolan...
Anyway... with that out of the way...
All that balderdash about the Tesla machine was patently stuff and nonsense because christian Bale did the trick the first time without it. The only conclusion one could reach was that he had a twin brother. And if Tesla was working for Christian Bale to trick the other one, why did he build him a real machine?
Answers:
Tesla was a world class engineering genius and it would have been in his character to build a machine no one else could. This aspect of the movie made it all the more fun to see.
