I think the line is funny, and the movies is awesome, but what exactly does that line mean?

When going into ludicrous speed all crew members must use a seat belt for their own safety, and the ship goes so fast, it leaves a trail of plaid behind (parodying the "warp trail" seen in the first few Star Trek films).
