The last unicorn?!

Question:

The last unicorn?

I loved this little cartoon! It seemed so dark for a child, but I now own it 20+ years later b/c I felt a little attached to it. Anyone else feel the same? I thought about it b/c I had a dream last night of being chased by a bull. Thinking of the red bull still gives me the creeps. Its a sad little cartoon, but I love it! Why do some things just stick with people? Anyways, anything you want to say about it I want to hear. What did the bull represent... the unicorn? etc etc

Answers: I also love this movie and it's soundtrack. I bought it for my 6 year old, and she loves it as well. You know, I never saw it as a kid (I was a little sheltered), but I picked it up at the video store and fell in love right away.
I don't think it's dark at all. There is plenty of hope in the movie, and it has a happy ending. Along with literary references (like the magical illusion about Robin Hood), and inferences to lost religion or lost friends ("Where were you when I needed you?"...one of my favorite scenes).
As an adult I can analyze the movie and see a lot of references to adult issues like the one listed above. I'm not sure how much of this my daughter is soaking up, but we talk about the scenes and the characters' feelings. For her, she just enjoys watching it and thinking about a long lost magical time.

In simple terms, for me, the red bull represents growing up and the loss of innocence, and the unicorns, in turn, represent the fight to keep that innocence, and in the end, managing to survive with a little of that still intact.

Thanks for the question, I love these kind. I think we'll watch this movie again this Saturday! I loved that cartoon..to me the bull represented rage and stubborness..Oh wait thatwas my Taurus ex girlfriend. I have the DVD of the film and I watch it once in a while, I just love it. I was about 15 when I saw it first- at the movies.... :-) It's just a great movie.. Another one that stuck with me from the time is Flight of Dragons (made by the same people with different actors voices)

But, FYI, at SOME point there is supposed to be a live action version made.. it's been talked about for YEARS and has yet to go into production.. although Christopher Lee has made an official statement that he has signed on for it.. squashing rumors that he was the one holding it up.. ( the intent is to get all the people they can from the cartoon into the live action.. like Mia Farrow and the like.. although, not necessarily in the same role) that was a great movie the end was really cool to aobut the sea horses...i always loved that movie...wasnt the unicorn in one seen like transformed into a beautiful woman that then could not talk??? i cant remember all of it its been about 16 years since i say it I am 24 years old and still watch it when I'm feeling depressed. It is my absolute favorite movie. I feel the Unicorn is so brave because she is able to leave everything familiar and go out into the world to search of what is important to her. To me, the unicorn respresents someone with strenth, bravery and willpower. The red bull would represent anything that gets in your way and scares you. You can let things run you into ocean...or you can fight back and come out stronger in the end.
Sorry if that was a bit much...it's just that I have a deep connection with that movie!
