Whats the greatest sci fi movie of all time?!

Question:

Whats the greatest sci fi movie of all time?

Answers: serenity - i love it!!!!!!!! i know, that "old-fashioned" but, i still believe the old StarWars
were the best of the best. When we talk about good Si-Fi...
There are a couple of Science-Fiction, made from the early days into the eighties...sorry, but i dislike "todays" Science-Ficion Movies...just average, nothing new... Star Wars Space Odyssey 2001 Forbidden Planet (1951)

Even in its rushed state (studio pressures), it remains one of the most influential science fiction films.

1) It used an electronic score. Some films afterward also would use electronic scores though the original remains quite distinctive.

2) It had a remarkable robot who undoubtedly influenced those that came after, from Tobor to Robot ("Lost in Space") to C3PO (an intellectual servant though his appearance was closer to the Maria robot in "Metropolis").

3) The spaceship shape (a saucer) was even copied for the Jupiter spacecraft in "Lost in Space".

4) It's credited with inspiring the creation of "Star Trek", too. The film could serve as a pattern for a Trek episode.

5) It doesn't deal merely with a space monster though there is the creature from the id. The tantalizing hints of an ancient civilization is awe-inspiring, and the tour of the alien architecture still is remarkable, especially considering the limitations for filmmakers in the early Fifties.

6) It showed people that science fiction wasn't "kids' stuff" and brought a lot of attention to the genre that would fade over the years to be slightly revived by "2001" but would have to wait for the first "Star Wars" and "CE3K". Sadly, "2001" only encouraged SF filmmakers to come up with films with incomprehensible endings~scriptwriter copout instead of that skillfully and artistically delivered in "2001".

I loved it when John Carpenter used clips from "Forbidden Planet" and fellow '51 release "The Thing from Another World" as Dr. Dementia's marathon in "Halloween", even though there are goof-ups in continuity.

BTW: "2001: A Space Odyssey"

BTW2: the Star Wars saga is absolutely, definitely, undoubtedly, undeniably science fiction! There is no doubt about it! It involves space travel, robots, alien civilizations, and more. It's teasingly called "space opera", but it definitely isn't fantasy. So, it's solidly sci fi. I was born the year sci fi made its comeback and have loved it for more than half a century. I embrace SW as science fiction.

BTW3: Did you know that there is an obscure SF film out there that nearly duplicates the Matrix's entire concept but was made years before it? Sadly, the film's title has slipped my mind, but it is the exact concept, even down to the look of the tentacled creatures who tend to the sleeping humans. I'm still trying to track down the name of this film for my records. Sorry, someone got to this concept before "The Matrix" series. Actually, "Dark City" has many of the first film's elements; the human beings' dreams and mental images are being used by their keepers. A lot of people will probably say Star Wars, but technically it's not sci-fi. True science fiction is about how new inventions and discoveries might lead to dramatic changes in how we live -- for better or worse. In that sense, I'd say 2001: A Space Odyssey has to be one of the best. matrix has it all. the concept alone is very original and gets anyone to think on its message. its one movie many fans like to see all over again. its so consuming exciting and mysterious not to mention the action and special effects and those very interesting characters. one could actually just listen to the sound and dialogue ( without seeing the picture ) and one could feel the excitement. i know becaue i tried it.

some nut will say space odyssey i totally disagree. some people want to feel ' superior ' over the ordinary fans so they pick anything that the real fans couldnt possibly like. what can you pick up from that movie, except hal talking like having a drug overdose. Star Wars: A New Hope; Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back; Star Wars: Return of the Jedi; NOT Episode 1: The Phantom Menace; Star Wars: Episode 2: Attack of the Clones ; and Star Wars: Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith...but NOT Phantom Menace...except for Darth Maul, he was the only cool thing about that movie and they killed him off!
