The whole movie is about Ray and his Father ( you dont know that until the very end though.) Yes, Ray felt guilty about the way he treated his father. Ray was a "Hippie" for lack of a better term and hated his father for his more "traditional values." His father died before they had a chance to mend their relationship.

The voice whispers at one point "ease his pain." Ray doesnt know it at the time, but its his father's pain he is easing, and not Shoeless Joe Jackson's.
