What do you think of the ending of the Golden Compass being cut? *spoilers*?!

Question: I have just read that they are cutting the end of the Golden Compass, and ending it after the fight between the two bears, cutting out the last three chapters, including the climax between Lyra and Lord Asriel, and Roger's death. Apparently this is to leave the movie on a high. (And problems with special effects I think, even though I have seen these scenes being used in the trailers)

I am really dissapointed as I think that it will not close the story well enough and Roger's death will not be as emotional if people are seeing it a year later.

These scenes are to put on the beginning of the next film.
What do other fans think of this?

I agree! Lord Asriel's betrayal is the most climactic scene in the book. What a pity.
